Mazda MX-5 NA Description (English Translation)
Exterior Design: It features a cute and endearing shape with a unique style. When the pop-up headlights are on, combined with the front grille and rounded overall appearance, it resembles a pair of cheerful big eyes. Its body dimensions are 3,970mm in length, 1,675mm in width, and 1,235mm in height, with a curb weight of 980kg. The weight distribution is close to 50:50, and the drag coefficient is 0.38Cd. Thanks to its convertible design, compact body, and distinctive styling, it stands out in the niche Roadster market.
Powertrain Configuration: Initially, it was equipped with a 1.6L DOHC (Double Overhead Camshaft) engine from the Mazda 323, delivering a maximum power of 86kW and a maximum torque of 135N·m, mated to a 5-speed manual transmission from the Mazda 929. Later, a 4-speed automatic transmission was also offered for the Japanese and U.S. markets. After the mid-cycle facelift in 1994, the original 1.6L engine was replaced by an all-new 1.8L engine codenamed BP-ZE, which generated a maximum power of 96kW and a maximum torque of 149N·m.
Historical Significance: It made its debut at the Chicago Auto Show in 1989. Immediately after its launch, it was named "Car of the Year" or "Convertible of the Year" by major automotive magazines and won numerous awards consecutively, gaining widespread fame. It revitalized the niche Roadster market – over an 8-year period, Mazda's Hiroshima plant produced more than 530,000 units. In May 2000, Guinness World Records officially recognized the Mazda MX-5 as the world's best-selling two-seat convertible sports car and awarded it the certificate.
Renowned for its compact size, light weight, advanced technology, dynamic balance, and simplistic design, the Mazda MX-5 NA is often hailed as the successor to 1960s British sports cars. Its success laid a solid foundation for the development of subsequent Mazda MX-5 models.
